Chasing Light and Legacy: A Photographer’s Ascent to Bossington Hill

The gravel crunches underfoot as I swing the car door shut, the early morning air crisp against my skin. At the end of Hill Road, nestled in Bossington Car Park, I pause for a moment, adjusting the weight of my backpack before hoisting it onto my shoulders. There’s always that initial hesitation, the unspoken battle between comfort and adventure, but as a photographer, I know the best images don’t come from the car park.

I set off, marching with determined purpose, my chest puffing slightly, not out of bravado but necessity—trying to disguise the effort of the ascent. The years have layered experience onto my frame, and with it, a little more weight than I’d like, but that has never stopped me from seeking out the landscapes that stir something deep within. And this, this view over Porlock and its marsh, is one worth every laboured breath.

As the incline steepens, my boots find their rhythm on the well-trodden path. The scent of damp earth and salt air mingles, a reminder that this is a place shaped by time and tide. The marsh below, with its winding channels and skeletal remains of ancient trees, holds stories of both destruction and renewal—a theme that echoes through my photography. The light here is a gift, shifting unpredictably, draping the landscape in fleeting moods that demand to be captured.

Reaching the crest, I pause, not just for breath but to absorb the sheer expanse before me. The morning sun fights through the cloud cover, painting Porlock Bay in soft golds and muted blues. I unsling my camera, fingers instinctively adjusting settings, mind already composing the shot. It’s in moments like these that I remember why I do this — not just for the images, but for the act of seeing, of bearing witness to a landscape that will never be quite the same again.

Each photograph taken is a testament to the journey, the effort, and the quiet conversations I have with the land. And as I stand here, overlooking the marsh, I know that this climb—every step, every breath—has been worth it.
