YMCA Metal Heads – Minehead

This charming image captures a delightful installation titled Minehead Metal Heads, created by artist Steven Heard. Commissioned by the YMCA in Minehead, the artwork stands proudly on The Avenue in Minehead, Somerset.

Crafted entirely from recycled metal, the four cheerful figures are creatively designed to represent the iconic letters Y.M.C.A., a nod to the globally recognised song and the organisation’s inclusive spirit. Each figure features a brightly painted gas canister for a torso, complete with quirky facial expressions and fun hairstyles, bringing a sense of character and playfulness to the street.

From left to right:

  • The first figure, wearing a blue top and standing on a pink base, represents the letter Y.
  • The second, in a vibrant orange outfit with a skirt-like detail, holds the letter M.
  • The third, sporting a teal top and brown legs, represents C.
  • The fourth figure, with a deep red top and standing on a yellow base, holds the letter A.

The figures celebrate creativity and sustainability and contribute to local identity and community pride. With a background of quaint architecture and flower boxes, the installation offers both a fun photo opportunity and a meaningful reminder of the YMCA’s welcoming presence in the town.
