Standing there with my camera in hand, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of the moment as I gazed upon the Highland cow and its calf. The bright sunlight reflected off the snow, creating a surreal, almost dreamlike atmosphere. The cow’s shaggy coat shimmered in warm tones against the icy landscape, and the calf, smaller and more vulnerable, stood nestled close to its mother. It was a perfect image of maternal instinct and tenderness, but as a seasoned photographer, I couldn’t ignore the sense of unease stirring in my chest.
I’ve photographed wildlife many times before, but being 55 now, I’m more acutely aware of the balance between capturing the moment and staying safe. My mind drifted to the cow’s massive horns, sharp and intimidating. She stood steady and alert, her eyes tracking my every move. I was a stranger in her world, and the calf was her most precious possession. A part of me questioned whether I should even be here. What if she saw me as a threat? Would she charge to protect her baby?
I positioned myself carefully, respecting the distance between us, but my heart raced as I raised the camera. The cold air bit at my skin, but the adrenaline kept me focused. I’ve learned to trust my instincts, yet they screamed at me to stay vigilant. This was their domain, not mine, and any misstep could lead to an unpleasant encounter.
As I framed the shot, the cow relaxed slightly, perhaps sensing my intention wasn’t harm. A wave of relief and awe washed over me. Something is humbling about moments like this, where nature’s power and vulnerability are laid bare. For a photographer, it’s a privilege – but it’s also a reminder to tread lightly in the world’s wild spaces.
